Northwards towards the edge of the valley bottom/base of the slope, trench 7 revealed a very different profile. Beneath about 70 cm of silt loam and pebble hillwash material and c. 30 cm of brown silt loam alluvial material, there was a very dark brown to black silty clay loam horizon developed on the metamorphic bedrock. This highly organic horizon with a stone-free upper half is suggestive of a buried soil, even if it is, in effect, an incipient soil developed in alluvial material. Given the rarity of such an occurrence in the geoarchaeological survey as a whole, this profile was extensively sampled.
